CALIFORNIA MEETS COPENHAGEN STYLE
Playful details, creative spaces, and plenty of plywood, tiles, and muted pastels — welcome to Bethany Brill’s California home, where Scandinavian design meets a New York loft feel and laid-back Cali vibes. By blending contrasting elements like soft pillows with shiny tiles and rounded corners in square rooms, Bethany shows that creating your dream home is all about staying true to your style and embracing color. For her daughters' music room, she chose Tender Clouds wallpaper in soft blue. Curious about Bethany’s decorating style? Read the interview below.

Hi Bethany ! Tell us about your home?
We renovated this really special 1980s townhouse by the beach in Costa Mesa and it has become our little creative family haven. We’ve lived here about 3 years, and we have used every nook and cranny and made each surface our own. My home is equal parts safe, restful and energizing. I am here for a respite, but I am also here to create.
What inspires you?
I love seeing a person that is so in touch with what they enjoy and their own style, that they don’t need to chase or compare to anyone else — they make a lane of their own and there’s a consistency or evolution of it. I find that type of settled person so captivating and it inspires me to keep pursuing my own lane with confidence.
“My home is equal parts safe, restful and energizing.”
What inspired your choice of wallpaper?
I loved the idea of taking this small windowless room and making it feel like it was open to the sky with this Tender Clouds wallpaper in soft blue. This music room began as an extra closet in my kids' shared bedroom and evolved over a couple of years. It clicked when they started using the space for their little band performances — it was perfect for a music room!
I actually had clouds painted on my bedroom ceiling as a child which is why I chose a cloud theme with the Peel & Stick wallpaper on the back wall and slanted ceiling, giving the room an airy feel. Plywood serves as a sound barrier, with a circle cutout for added light. Once we added a stainless-steel desk and their musical items, the space transformed into a cozy, creative hub.
What's your favorite interior piece?
My favorite item has to be this bright red little lamp. It travels all around my house, and even into our music room, adding a graphic shape and a pop of color which is a core element throughout my design work and overall style. I also love red!
“I love customizing spaces to make them feel like a little part of each of us are woven into every square inch.”
What are your top 3 interior design tips?
- Choose your knick-knacks wisely: One or two things you love can speak much louder than a bunch of clutter.
- Embrace color: Even if it’s subtle — I think developing a palette of your favorite colors (that feels like you) is just a beautiful way to express yourself.
- Try something and change your mind: Design is supposed to be a play-filled experiment— don’t make it so serious.
